Defining Your Site - Speaking To Your Customers

Defining your site

If you haven't already done so, now is the time to decide exactly what it is that your site is about. What product are you selling, what information are you offering, or what problem are you solving? That may seem like a silly question; after all, your site is about what it's about. If people go take a look at it, they'll see in a minute what it's about. The problem is, the people you need to take a look, don't know it's there. And part of the reason they don't know it's there, is because you haven't made a good case to the search engines about what your site is and is not about. One of the biggest challenges facing small business websites is developing a good keyword strategy that will help define your site to the search engines, bringing you more of the customers you need.

Search Engines

You may already know about SEO and the role it plays in telling search engines all about your site. Making sure the search engines know who you are and what you do is important because an estimated 80% of online purchases begin  with a query to a search engine Customers come to Google, Bing, Yahoo, and other search engines with a question or a need. The search engine looks through it's vast files of information, on all the websites that are out there, trying to find the very best answer. The search engine examines your domain name, your page titles, meta descriptions, and the content on your page for clues as to what your site is about and how it can help people find answers to their questions and solutions to their problems. It is the job of SEO to make it very clear to the search engine exactly what your site is about, what solutions you offer, and who you can help on your website. But before SEO can be implemented to do it's job, first you have to define exactly what your site is about, what solutions you offer, and who you can help.

Speaking to your customer

Once you've defined, in your mind or on paper, exactly what your site is about and who you can help, it's time to get inside the mind of your ideal customer. Imagine that you are your customer, who just discovered their desperate need for green widgets, the very green widgets that you sell on your site. If you are that customer, what are the words you type into the search bar? Do you search for "green widgets" or "great green widgets?" Maybe "groovy green widgets?" By getting inside the head of your ideal customer, you can begin to enter search terms (the words you type into the search bar of a search engine) that seem relevant to your product and your customer. Go one step further and ask a current customer, or friend, what search terms they would use to find your product, if they didn't know about your site.

Developing a small business keyword strategy

As you enter search terms, and think of new ones, keep a notebook handy to start a list of these keywords and key phrases. Each of these terms is important to developing a comprehensive small business keyword strategy. If you're using google to figure out search terms, you'll find a box in the bottom left hand corner of your screen labelled "related search terms." Use these terms as inspiration as you continue seeking out new terms related to your website and products.

Once you have a good list to begin with, you could use a keyword list generator. You can find one on Moz.com or Google Adwords. There are also other, free, keyword generators available. A professional SEO strategist can help you get inside the head of your ideal customer, and use professional level tools to develop a keyword strategy that's geared directly toward that perfect persona. Professional keyword tools can help you evaluate the various keywords for potential and difficulty in ranking for those words. What does that mean? Consider your primary competition for those keywords, the website that is already ranking right at the top of the search results for that keyword or phrase. Professional tools can dissect those rankings and show you exactly how difficult it would be to take that top spot. This is valuable insight, especially for competitive keywords and phrases.

Once you've developed a list of keywords and phrases that really express who your website is speaking to and what solutions you have to offer, you'll need to develop a comprehensive plan for optimizing different pages of your website for these various keywords and phrases. Even if you thought you wanted to, just shoving all of those keywords onto a single page, wouldn't do a thing for your rankings. In fact, it might get you dropped in rank. But finding or creating pages on your website that can be optimized for each of these words, will, over time, bring your site closer and closer to the top of the search rankings, where most of the click through happens. Sites in the top three search results get 85% of the clicks. So making it to the top is worth the effort for what it will bring you in increased traffic and sales.
